Find Some Principles

Canadians' discontent with Stephen Harper was caused by his failure to live up to the principles he espoused while in Opposition.
Even though it makes my job as a member of the Official Opposition a little easier, I am genuinely disappointed that this Conservative government didn’t hold true to the principles that brought it to power.
And I’m not even talking about their abject failure to be fiscally responsible or their enthusiasm for patronage and pork. I’m referring to the basic premise of the old Reform Party, the call for a government that is open, accountable, and respectful of democratic values and the rights of its citizens.
Instead, over the past four years, Stephen Harper has carefully nurtured and encouraged a level of cynicism about politics and politicians heretofore unseen in Canada. Instead of championing the conservative principle of less government, he made people believe less in government.
He started by selling us policies that were simple and catchy, but had little real impact (think GST cuts instead of income-tax cuts, or $100 child-care cheques instead of actual child-care spaces). Add to that his propensity to launch vicious personal attacks on anyone – politician or citizen – with the temerity to disagree with them, and his tried and true Bush-era tactic of loudly repeating semi-truths and falsehoods often enough for them to take hold, and it’s no wonder that a weary populace has been turning away from the goings-on in Ottawa.
The fact that Stephen Harper didn't anticipate the strength of the prorogation outrage is proof that he overestimated the effectiveness of his campaign of induced cynicism. And, yet again, underestimated Canadians' faith in our democracy. Because for all the undeniable short-term partisan advantages of wedge issues, attack ads, and the politics of division, Canadians resist because we know that we deserve better.
We are a people of differences, in languages, religions, backgrounds, histories, cultures, and colours, but we are a people bound together by values that run deeper. We are open, compassionate, and generous. We seek justice, liberty, and opportunities for all. But above everything, we respect each other, and demand that respect in return.
And that’s why Stephen Harper’s strategies of secrecy, small-mindedness, and cynicism will ultimately fail, because simply put: Canadians will never trust a government that does not trust Canadians.

“ Mr Trudeau, it will thrill the cockles of my Canadian heart to see the last of Mr Harper. I hope you can help lead Canada the just society that your dear Papa dreamed of for this nation. One day you will be PM. Now politics seem filled with attack methods of gaining power. This fearful way of doing politics can be phased into relentless building-up of what we can do rather than what others are doing wrong. Happy Trails.

“ Fine words, Mr. Trudeau. However, I think you fail to see past your own party's actions and contribution to the current state of government. You also fail to consider (at least in your article) the influence of politics in a minority government which causes parties in power to bend their principles to stay in government - hardly a trait unique to the Conservative Party of Canada. I don't think Harper or the Conservatives are the only ones to blame for Canadians' apathy or disillusion with government. All parties share a hand in that with the Liberal party being no exception nor any less responsible. Would the "strategies of secrecy, small-mindedness and cynicism" end if Mr. Ignatieff or Mr. Layton were Prime Minister? I think not. I will grant you the point that Canadians will never trust a government that does not trust Canadians -- nor should they -- but apparantly the current Prime Minister has much more relative trust than any other party leader in this country. What does that say about how the principles of the Liberal party resonate with Canadians? Perhaps members of the Liberal party would do better to spend time examining their party's own principles rather than criticize those of others.

“ So let me get this straight...The Liberal Party of Canada tears itself in two, due to in-fighting and backstabbing. Liberal party insiders steal hundreds of millions of dollars of tax-payers money in order to buy nationalist votes in Quebec. No real investigative ensues. The public turns on the LPC and demands renewal. Enter Dion. Exit Dion. Enter Ignatieff.. You people don't get it at all.. The Liberal party is a ghost. People are tired of their lies (Mulroney inquiry, h1n1, wafer-gate, Olympic logo-gate, body-bag-gate, the list goes on ), You're beloved liberal party is a disgustingly opportunistic shadow of its former self. Your Party has done more to divide Canada (native against non-native, french against the rest of canada, ethnic against white) that any force operating in canada today. Your self righteous platitudes disgust Canadians. If the Liberals want to end this conservative "reign of terror" you have the power. Call an election and get trounced...go ahead..do it...We dare you!

“ I have a very hard time taking seriously a young man who has never made his own way in life (c'mon Justin, you've rode your daddy's coattails all your life), professes an admiration for the murderous dictator of a Caribbean nation, and can't get his head around the how and why of the societal evolution of post-Soviet Russia. The bottom line, young feller is that most of our problems can be traced back to bad government, and the biggest cause of bad government is simply having too much government.

“ Mr.Trudeau, With all due respect, you should get out more often. There are many, many Canadians who do not experience the country like you do. They simply know how to live without platitudes, attitudes and snobby-tudes. May I remind you that PM Harper has come to power with support from many of those ordinary Canadians, who will not appreciate your condescending tone expressed within your piece. Mr.Trudeau, my advise for you would be to get out more. Try and understand how ordinay people live and think in this country. You, sir, would be wise to leave the silver spoon far behind and instead pick up a sturdy pitchfork to clean out the Liberal Headquarter's stable. When that has been accomplised, I will show you the courtesy to listen to what you have to say. Francien Verhoeven (ordinary Canadian)

“ I am terribly tired of the Harper governments contempt for democracy. But, I'm not surprised by it. The CPC is not a progressive conservative party. John Diefenbaker and Robert Stanfield are not the type of members they attract or value. Harper will say and do what it takes to get elected ... then he will disregard the his promises. .... I enjoyed your article and look forward to what you write in the future.

“ Dear Justin, This would be the time for the Liberals to show Canadians that indeed ,they are listening. We do deserve better. The outrage Canadians feel for it's current governement, revolves around it's policies. The Liberal Party has a responsibility, if it wants to rely on the continued support of "average Canadians", to oppose, BIll C-15. Mandatory minimums are serious, and to include 1 cannabis plant in a bill that would send a Canadian to prison for 6 months to 2 years for possessing this 1 plant, is pure insanity. I have done my best to relay the contents of this bill to as many Canadians as I can, and the response is always the same. Their jaws drop. No one knew!!! Under the guise of "we're getting tough on serious drug crime", it has slipped under the radar. More people have committed to vote against the Conservatives based on this single policy than for any other reason I can give them. Of all the heinous things Stephen Harper has proposed, this may be the single most damaging. An 18 year old "passing" a "joint", to a 17 year old, 1 year,(trafficking), mandatory? This is a moral and fiscal nightmare, and if the Liberals let that bill pass the house, then who are we to trust, who are we to support? American style justice is the last thing we need . To include these menial amounts in a crime bill with a mandatory sentence attached to it is unimaginable. Trust Canadians enough to reveal the true contents of this bill to the "average Canadian" and see what I have seen. Building new prisons to house the "average Canadian" for such outrageously menial amounts of cannabis is a disgrace. Re connect with the average canadian,,these could be our children. One need not use cannabis to understand that this bill is ideology in action. It protects no-one, and instead will target and incarcerate all the wrong people. We may have been apathetic in the past, but we are watching now. We are engaged as never before. Stop this madness. Denise Julien
