The Mark Radio ep. 18: Striking a balance between work and life has never been harder in our increasingly competitive world.
Working nine to five is a song fewer Canadians are singing these days, now that more jobs require employees to put in longer hours to stand out among their co-workers. Increased competition comes from increased communication – now that the world is a smaller place, you're competing against everyone in it, and if you're not willing to work the hardest, you can be sure that someone else is. But when work becomes our priority, what do we lose? Is there a way to find success without having to sacrifice something?
This week on the Mark Radio, host Chris Mitchell speaks with three experts with different perspectives on how to strike a balance between work and life.
First, a conversation with Beatrix Dart, executive director of the Rotman School's Initiative for Women in Business. She believes policies in Canada need to change so that women won't have to choose between a successful career and having a family.
Also on the show, philosopher Joseph Heath on whether work is an essential part of human nature, or something that's been ingrained in us over time.
Finally, mixologist Jeremy Parsons explains why partying for a living is not as easy as it might seem.
