The smartphone manufacturer has yet to satisfy the government’s demand for access to encrypted messages

Research In Motion is facing a shutdown of its popular BlackBerry phone network in India if it doesn’t find a way to assuage the government’s security concerns by August 31. Militants used mobile phones to coordinate deadly attacks in Mumbai in 2008 and India has demanded RIM supply it with a method to decode messages sent from the smartphone, which uses sophisticated encryption technology. RIM has yet to supply security officials with decoding technology, citing the privacy concerns of its customers. The company has been attempting to reach a deal with the Indian government for weeks but so far has been unsuccessful. India is the fastest-growing mobile phone market in the world.
