How well do you know your parliamentarians? Guess which MP said this quote and you could win a prize.
Today is the fourth edition of Samara's bi-weekly "Guess Who?" contest, where we reveal a quote from one of our MP exit interviews. Guess which of the participating MPs spoke the words below before noon EST on Thursday, September 2. We'll randomly choose one winner from among the correct guesses, and send him or her a book of their choosing from the list of the Best of Canadian Political Writing.
This week, our quote comes from a former cabinet minister who expresses her belief that Canada might overlook the significance of its system of governance.
“I think it’s worthwhile exploring the quality of democracy, because democracy is the very essence of our society. If you and I went around this room and said to each one of these people, ‘Off the top of your head, what is the defining characteristic of Canada?’ or, ‘What do you think is the most important element of our society?’, my guess is very few would say, ‘We’re a democracy.’ They would say, 'We’re multicultural. We have single payer health care.' They would say whatever. But I bet few would say, ‘It’s because we have the right to elect our people and if we don’t like them, we can toss them out.’”
