RIM wins BlackBerry reprieve in India

The smartphone manufacturer had been facing a shutdown of its network in India, but now has 60 days to negotiate a deal with the government.

Waterloo, ON-based Research in Motion Ltd. won an eleventh hour stay of a ban on its BlackBerry network in India yesterday. The Indian government had given RIM an August 31 deadline to supply it with a way to monitor encrypted messages sent from the country’s 1 million BlackBerry’s because it fears terrorists could use the phones to plot attacks. The company has reportedly proposed a monitoring solution which the government says it will try and re-evaluate after sixty days. RIM’s stock has been falling based on fears of the ban in India and several other countries which have similar security concerns. India is the world’s fastest growing mobile phone market.
