Attacks on polling stations and widespread vote rigging are expected to accompany the country’s second-ever parliamentary vote.
Security across Afghanistan is being heightened today as the Taliban threaten to disrupt tomorrow’s elections with attacks on voters and election workers. About 1,000 of the country’s 7,000 polling stations will not be opened because of security concerns. The last election was marred by corruption and vote rigging, and the top UN envoy in the country said he expects this vote to be no different. “This is probably one of the worst places and the worst times to have an election anywhere in the world," said Staffan de Mistura. About 2,500 candidates are vying for 249 seats in parliament.
