With winter on the way, only temporary fixes can be made to roads, bridges.
Military personnel are still assessing the damage to about a dozen communities in the wake of Hurricane Igor. Six days ago the storm damaged bridges, caused landslides, and washed out roads, cutting off some communities from outside contact. Nine hundred service members are in the province, using techniques they were trained to use in places like Haiti and Afghanistan to deliver food, medicine, and fuel to Newfoundlanders. Three navy ships and a fleet of Sea King helicopters have also been dispatched. It will be months until conditions are back to normal because only temporary bridges can be built before winter halts construction.
