A German citizen captured in Kabul has said terrorists are planning “active shooter” attacks on European cities.
Ahmed Sidiqi says he became aware of plans to replicate the deadly 2008 Mumbai attacks on European soil while he was a member of a jihadist group in the Afghan-Pakistan border region. In November 2008 gunmen fired machine guns into crowds in Mumbai, killing 164 people. Sidiqi worked as a cleaner in Hamburg, but traveled to the Afghan-Pakistan border in 2009. He is now in U.S. custody. Security officials in Europe have been on high alert in recent days and the U.S. has stepped up drone attacks on targets in Pakistan. Intelligence agencies are increasingly concerned about European citizens traveling to Asia and returning to carry out attacks. About 200 Europeans are thought to have trained with jihadist groups since 9/11.
