Canada's paper of record gets a drastic redesign this Friday.
With readers deserting the paper in droves for online news sources, the Globe is banking on a radical revamp to revive its fortunes. Both the appearance and content of the 74-year-old broadsheet will get a makeover, with the paper itself slimming down and putting more emphasis on photos and friendly visuals. The new format will be printed on a variety of stock, including a few bright glossy pages. Rick Salutin, the left-leaning journalist who's penned a weekly column in the Globe for 20 years has been dropped in favour of the younger, hipper Irshad Manji. In general, stories will be shorter. The paper relaunches on Friday with a series of stories about quintessentially Canadian topics. Check out a preview of the new design here.
