Before Tuesday, the strictly-controlled state media had never even published Kim Jong-un’s name. This week newspapers reported that he’s been appointed a four-star general, but have yet to mention that he is also the son of North Korea’s leader. Now they have published a photo of both Kims posing after a rare meeting of the ruling Workers’ Party that many believe was convened to ensure a smooth succession from father to son. The elder Kim is believed to be in poor health after suffering a stroke in 2006, and the political stability of the nuclear-armed state is a major concern in the region. Twenty-something Kim Jong-un has two older brothers, who Kim Jong-Il has described as too “girlish” and incompetent to rule.
