Archbishop Seraphim Storheim is one of the highest-ranking orthodox officials in Canada.
Police have launched an investigation into allegations that Storheim, now 64, abused two boys in Winnipeg 20 years ago. A spokesperson for a victims advocacy group said that the boys complained to the church at the time of the alleged abuse, and that a priest told church leaders of the allegations again in 2008. In a message to his parishioners, Storheim said he was stepping down from his post temporarily, but he did not say why. He suggested he had been advised by a doctor to take a leave of absence. Storheim is a member of the Orthodox Church in America (OCA) and not affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church, which is facing its own ever-growing abuse scandal.
