A new survey contradicts the idea that Canadians are divided along urban-rural lines on gun control.
If the Conservatives succeed in their quest to eliminate the long-gun registry, it appears they’ll only have the support of one-third of the country. A new poll has found that in all regions, most Canadians support the gun control program, which was saved by a very close parliamentary vote last month. The registry was the subject of intense debate over the summer, with the Conservatives claiming they had strong rural support to eliminate the program. The poll contradicts that idea, but also indicates that the Tories played the issue expertly by using it as means to shore up support among the party’s base while stealing votes from the NDP, who were internally divided on the issue.
