The Philadelphia Phillies ace pitched a near-perfect game in his first playoff start.
Roy Halladay spent 12 seasons pitching for the hapless Toronto Blue Jays, and never got a sniff at the playoffs until he was traded to the Phillies last December. Last night the future hall-of-famer finally got his first post-season start, and it was one for the ages. Halladay went all nine innings against the Cincinnati Reds, striking out eight batters and allowing only one walk, to become only the second pitcher in baseball history to pitch a no-hitter in the playoffs. The only other player to achieve the feat was the New York Yankees’ Don Larsen in the 1956 World Series. The Phillies won 4-0, and have a 1-0 lead in the American League Division Series. In the other ALDS game, the Yankees downed the Minnesota Twins 6-4.
