Lawyers for the Canadian charged with war crimes are in negotiations with the U.S. government to bring him home from Guantanamo Bay.
The judge at Omar Khadr’s war crimes trial at Guantanamo Bay has delayed the resumption of proceedings until Oct. 25. to give time for Khadr’s lawyers to reach a plea deal with the U.S. government. The trial had been scheduled to resume on Monday. His lawyers have said previously that Khadr would only plead guilty if he could leave Guantanamo Bay and serve time in Canada, a prospect that the Conservative government isn’t fond of. Stephen Harper has refused to intervene in the case, despite the fact that Khadr was born in Canada and is the only person in 60 years to be put on trial for alleged war crimes committed as a minor. Khadr was 15 when he allegedly killed a U.S. soldier in Afghanistan.
