According to the National Post, a ship carrying migrants from southeast Asia is about to set sail.
An unnamed senior Canadian government official told the newspaper that a ship similar to the MV Sun Sea is preparing to head towards Canada. The Sun Sea brought 492 Tamil migrants from Thailand to the shores of B.C. this summer, sparking controversy over how Canada’s refugee system should handle seaborne migrants as well as concern that the country could become a target for human smugglers. The Canadian government is suspected of prompting Thai officials to arrest 155 Tamils in Bangkok earlier this month as part of a new strategy to head off smuggling operations before they hit the water. The Conservative government has promised to change Canadian law to more effectively deal with human smugglers.
