The newspaper made the controversial decision to run photos the serial killer took of his crimes on its front page this morning.

As Col. Russell Williams’s crimes escalated from fetish break-ins to murder, the killer took full-frontal photographs of himself posing in lingerie he stole from the scenes of his crimes. The Toronto paper decided to run one of those photos on its front page this morning, and posted an interactive gallery of other images he took on their website. Williams is in a Belleville, Ont. courtroom today, on the second day of proceedings that have seen him plead guilty to two murders. The courtroom has heard that apart from taking the lingerie photos, he also videotaped the rape and murder of Jessica Lloyd. Toronto Star publisher John Cruikshank appeared on CBC Radio today and said the images weren’t published to sell papers.
