Police had been seeking Normand Ouimet for two years.
Montreal police swooped in on a taxi Ouimet was in on St. Denis Street on Monday and arrested him. A warrant for his arrest was issued in 2009 as part of a sweeping police crackdown assisted by a biker turned informant. Ouimet was the leader of a Hells Angel chapter during the Québec’s notorious biker wars of the 1990s, which saw a series of bombings, drive-by shootings, and kidnappings tear across Montreal. Yesterday he was charged with 22 murders, as well as several counts of fraud related to money laundering schemes. He briefly owned LM Sauvé, a construction firm now at the centre of a government scandal over a contract it was awarded to renovate Parliament’s West Block.
