30 tonnes of marijuana, smuggling tunnel found on U.S.-Mexico border

The seizure wasn’t even the biggest bust this year.

While investigating suspicious activity at a warehouse in San Diego, U.S. authorities discovered 30 tonnes of marijuana and a 550-metre underground tunnel leading to another warehouse in Tijuana. The tunnel was equipped with a small railway, and had been used to transport 26 tonnes of the drug into San Diego. Police intercepted ten more tonnes in a truck in California, and Mexican authorities found five tonnes on their side of the border. Police have uncovered similar tunnels in the past, which are used to ferry drugs and people into the U.S., but this time the smugglers were caught in the act, which is rare. Last month, Mexican authorities uncovered 105 tonnes of marijuana in a border warehouse.
