Montreal man wins $8.9-million World Series of Poker title

Jonathan Duhamel has entered a new tax bracket.

A sea of Montreal Canadiens jerseys filled the high-roller suite in Sin City’s Rio hotel last night, as 125 of Duhamel’s friends and family celebrated his big win. The 23-year-old clinched victory with an inauspicious ace high hand, beating out runner-up John Racener, who will be consoled by a $5.5-million second-place prize. Duhamel has been making a living off poker for the past two years, and so far this year made about $43,000 playing cards. The World Series of Poker began back on July 5 with 7,319 participants, some of them the biggest names in cards. Duhamel outlasted them all. He said he doesn’t know what he’ll do with the money but pledged $100,000 for a Montreal children’s charity.
