Burma’s Suu Kyi to Be Released: Reports

The pro-democracy activist has been under house arrest for 15 years.
Reports coming out of the tightly controlled military state say that Burmese generals have signed a release order for Aung San Suu Kyi, who has spent 15 of the past 21 years confined to her home in Rangoon. She led the National League for Democracy, which won election in 1990 but was prohibited by the military from taking power. Her detention period is set to expire on Saturday and it appears it will not be extended. The news comes days after a military-backed party won the country’s first elections in 20 years, which were widely described as fraudulent by observers. Suu Kyi’s lawyer said she would only accept an unconditional release that allowed her to return to politics.
