Charest Threatens to Sue Rival Over “Godfather” Comment

Action démocratique du Québec leader Gérard Deltell has until 5 pm today to retract his statement or he could face a lawsuit.
Deltell said in a speech on Saturday that Jean Charest was the “godfather” of the Liberal Party, a comment that came the same week as the assassination of Montreal Mafia don Nicolo Rizzuto and incensed the Québec premier. Charest’s lawyer sent a letter to Deltell yesterday demanding that he officially retract the statement by 5 pm Tuesday or else face a defamation lawsuit. Earlier Monday, Deltell refused to withdraw his comment. Charest is already suing his former justice minister Marc Bellemare for defamation after Bellemare accused him of influence peddling in relation to the appointment of provincial judges. The unpopular premier is also being urged to step down by an online petition, signed so far by over 11,000 people.
