Britain to Pay Millions to Former Guantanamo Detainees

The government has reached a settlement with a group of men who say they were the victims of extraordinary rendition.
The compensation payments come as a result of weeks of negotiations between the men’s lawyers and the British government, which had decided to send the cases to arbitration rather than undergo a lengthy trial that would have risked the disclosure of sensitive intelligence information. At least seven men will receive compensation, with one man reportedly receiving CDN$1.6 million. The men, all British citizens or residents, say that the government knowingly allowed them to be taken to various countries around to be tortured. They ended up at Guantanamo Bay and were eventually repatriated to Britain. Some of the men were alleged to have links with the Taliban.
