Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit has found that although police likely used excessive force, there’s insufficient evidence to tell which officers are responsible.
The SIU probed six incidents of excessive force during the G20 summit in Toronto, and found that while police were likely at fault there was no way to indentify the officers responsible. Riot police during the summit wore helmets that covered their faces and apparently their names and badges were not visible on footage captured by the multi-million dollar surveillance system installed to monitor protestors. Two officers implicated in one incident exercised their right not to be interviewed by the SIU. Several protestors suffered injuries and broken bones at the hands of police and the SIU chose to investigate the most serious allegations. No charges will be laid as a result of their investigation.
