The international police agency has issued a "red notice" for WikiLeaks co-founder Julian Assange in relation to allegations of rape and sexual assault in Sweden.
Swedish prosecutors first issued a warrant for Assange’s arrest in mid-November after two women claimed he sexually assaulted them while visiting Sweden in August. But in a bizarre sequence of events, a series of prosecutors overturned and then re-issued the charges against Assange, raising questions as to whether the case against him is politically motivated. That Interpol’s "red notice" against Assange comes days after WikiLeaks released thousands of secret U.S. diplomatic cables will fuel theories that government intelligence agencies are working to discredit him. Assange’s whereabouts are currently unknown, but the "red notice" will make it difficult for him to travel. Yesterday Stephen Harper’s former advisor Tom Flanagan joined several U.S. officials in calling for Assange’s assassination.
