Confusion Reigns in Haiti

  • First Posted: Dec 09 2010 09:34 AM

Demonstrators have burned down the headquarters of the governing party as protests against controversial election results continue.

One day there will be good news in Haiti. But for now the country seems to be lurching from crisis to crisis. Still struggling to rebuild from January’s massive earthquake and grappling with a deadly cholera outbreak believed to have been spread by UN soldiers who came to help, violent protests continued Wednesday as Haitians reacted to election results that international observers suspect were manipulated. A run-off vote between government-backed candidate Jude Célestin and former first lady Mirlande Manigat is scheduled for January, but supporters of Michel Martelly believe he was unfairly excluded. Barricades on Port-au-Prince roads have made travel by car impossible, and Wednesday protesters torched Célestin's Unity Party headquarters and shut down the city’s airport.
