Foreign Minister Lawrence Cannon has offered to take part in sorting out Haiti’s corruption-ridden presidential election.
The Provisional Electoral Council declared that government-backed candidate Jude Célestin placed first in the Nov. 28 elections, even though international observers had predicted he would finish third. Violent protests have wracked Haiti since the results were announced, as supporters of third-placed candidate Michel Martelly believe he was robbed of victory. The PEC has promised a recount, but many believe the council was involved in rigging the election in the first place and so international partners like Canada are needed to lend legitimacy to the process and restore some measure of political stability to the country. Cannon said he’s still waiting for details as to what role Canada will play in the recount, which could begin as early as Monday.
