A man stole the snow removal vehicle and went on a two-hour joy ride through the city.
A Toronto police officer named Sgt. Ryan Russell is dead after being struck by a snowplow that was hijacked just after 4 am in the city’s east end. The plow’s crew was shoveling snow around the vehicle when reportedly a barefoot man ran into the cab and drove off. Police pursued the vehicle as it swerved through the streets for two hours, colliding with parked cars and nearly hitting pedestrians. Officers fired on the driver and brought the plow to a halt around 6 am, but some time in between it struck Russell as he tried to stop it. He sustained life-threatening injuries and died in hospital. It’s unclear how seriously the driver was wounded.
