Aristide Says He’s Ready to Return to Haiti As Well

  • First Posted: Jan 20 2011 08:46 AM

The former Haitian president says he’d like to follow the lead of deposed dictator Jean-Claude Duvalier and return to his homeland.

Calling all ex-presidents! As Haitians continue to come to grips with Duvalier’s shock return, Jean-Bertrand Aristide has sent a letter from South Africa stating his wish to also come back to the country. Aristide has been living in exile in South Africa since being ousted by a 2004 coup, and his supporters have long been calling for his return. The populist leader was elected in 1990, deposed, and then reinstated to power by U.S. military force in 1994. In the later stages of his presidency he was widely accused of corruption. Duvalier is currently attempting to obtain a passport to leave Haiti after being released from custody Wednesday, despite corruption charges pending against him.
