Provincial officials have launched an investigation into a video of a York Region police officer claiming civilians did not have civil rights during the summit last June.
The Toronto-area police forces must be pining for the pre-Youtube era. Yet another video that was posted on the site is now the subject of an investigation, this time by the Ontario Independent Police Review Director. In the video, the officer tells a man refusing to submit to a search of his bag that “There is no civil rights here in this area.” At an earlier point in the video he says “This ain’t Canada right now.” During the summit there was widespread confusion over whether police could compel protestors to submit to searches after the hastily-passed “five metre law” appeared to give cops extraordinary powers.
