A pre-dawn raid on a hijacked freighter rescued 21 hostages from Somali pirates.
South Korean ships had been following the freighter for a week after it was hijacked in the Arabian Sea last Saturday. The South Korean freighter was carrying chemicals from the United Arab Emirates when it was boarded by Somali pirates who took its 21-member crew hostage and attempted to flee. The military’s special forces unit swooped in on the pirates Friday morning and were met by machine gun fire and rocket-propelled grenades, and in the ensuing battle the captain of the ship was shot in the stomach. The other crewmembers escaped unharmed but the pirates weren’t so lucky: eight of them were killed and five more were captured.
