Egypt Braces for Second Day of Protests

Calls for pro-democracy activists to gather in the streets went out on Twitter Wednesday morning.

Blame it on Tunisia. Popular protests that ousted the country’s dictator Zein El Abidine Ben Ali on Jan. 14 have sent ripples through the Arab world, with protestors in Egypt staging similar demonstrations that are planned to continue today. Two Egyptian protestors and a policeman died Tuesday as tens of thousands took to the streets to demand an end to Hosni Mubarak’s 30-year rule, and security officials warned they will immediately crack down on any signs of people gathering on Wednesday. Police have already detained 200 people who clashed with police early this morning. Unrest in Egypt, one of the few countries in the region to cooperate with Israel, could have major implications for the rest of the Middle East.
