Internet and phone service across the entire country has been cut as demonstrators clash with riot police in violent protests.
Shortly after morning prayers Friday, Egyptians took to the streets en masse for a fourth day of demonstrations demanding the resignation of authoritarian President Hosni Mubarak. An estimated one million people gathered at venues across Cairo and Alexandria, and the government has called in special forces to disperse the crowds with rubber bullets and water cannons. Plainclothes officers are reportedly roaming the streets and beating people with sticks. All internet traffic in and out of the country was suspended at 12:34 am and cellphones are no longer working, making it difficult for protestors to coordinate their actions. Seven Egyptians have died in protests that began Tuesday and were inspired by the popular uprising that ousted Tunisia’s president on Jan. 14.
