A new poll shows that the Liberals and NDP could have a winning strategy in opposing the government’s plans to lower corporate taxes.
If you’re reading this, chances are you don’t support the Conservatives’ tax-cut plan. A new poll has found that only one in ten Canadians wants to lower corporate taxes, emboldening the opposition parties that have threatened to vote down any budget that includes the tax-cut plan. The Conservatives intend to lower the amount Canadian corporations pay in income tax from 17 to 15 per cent, arguing that doing so will help the economic recovery. Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff has said he will not support any budget that cuts corporate taxes, and the NDP’s Jack Layton has hinted the same. Given popular opinion, Ignatieff and Layton will have fewer qualms about voting down the next budget and triggering an election.
