In the wake of Hosni Mubarak’s announcement that he will step down in September, the military says Egyptians’ voices have been heard.
Military spokesman Ismail Etman said Wednesday “Your message has arrived, your demands have become known” and urged anti-government protesters to return to normal life. But thousands of demonstrators remain in Cairo’s Tahrir square, unsatisfied with Mubarak’s offer to not run in September elections and suspicious that he will use that time to shape his successor’s regime to his liking. Wednesday could prove to be a major tipping point in the populist uprising against Mubarak, as protesters who have already won unprecedented concessions from the autocratic regime decide whether to keep pushing for Mubarak’s immediate resignation or conclude that his offer is enough, for now.
