The FBI has reportedly launched a sweeping probe into the California-based church that boasts some of Hollywood’s biggest stars as members.

According to an article published in the New Yorker Tuesday, the FBI has been investigating the secretive church for over a year after allegations surfaced that Scientology members who attempted to leave the organization were sent to forced labour camps in California. Scientology leader David Miscavige, who was the best man at Cruise’s wedding, allegedly beat members of the church to keep them in line. The article includes candid revelations from Canadian screenwriter and former Scientologist Paul Haggis, who left the church over its support for Proposition 8, the legislation banning gay marriage in California. While many celebrities, including Cruise and John Travolta, are Scientologists, the organization usually maintains a strict code of silence.
