According to Tim Hudak, high alcohol costs “are just one of many things hitting Ontario families in the pocket.”
Maybe he’s targeting the coveted drunk voter demographic? Just in time for Super Bowl weekend, Hudak issued a press release complaining that Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty’s decision to raise the minimum price of a 24-pack of beer to $25.60 was unfair. The price has since gone up to $25.95 when the bottle deposit is factored in. The provincial government raised prices after independent brewers like Lakeport began offering “buck-a-beer” products, and both the government and the Liquor Control Board of Ontario defended the move by saying it would encourage Ontarians to drink less. Hudak said if his party wins upcoming elections this fall, he would consider lowering the price back to the buck-a-beer level.
