In the first major demonstrations since the disputed 2009 election, thousands of anti-government protesters gathered in Tehran.
Now here’s a revolution the U.S. can get behind. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton slammed Iran’s “hypocrisy” yesterday, calling for Tehran to stop using force to quell dissent on its streets. One person was reportedly killed Monday during violent clashes between pro-reform demonstrators and security forces in the capital. Dozens, if not hundreds more were detained and opposition leaders were placed under house arrest. While the Iranian government hailed uprisings in U.S.-allied Tunisia and Egypt as “Islamic awakenings,” it has moved quickly to quash demonstrations within its own borders, using tear gas and baton-wielding men on motorbikes to disperse crowds. According to unconfirmed reports, there were also demonstrations in the cities of Isfahan, Mashhad, and Shiraz Monday.
