Obama Proposes Fees For Canadian Visitors

Hidden in the president’s 2012 budget is a plan to charge $5.50 to every Canadian arriving in the U.S. by plane or by boat.

The U.S. is facing a crushing multi-trillion-dollar debt, and apparently they want you to help pay for it. Amid all the dissection of Barack Obama’s controversial budget blueprint this week, most pundits missed the fact that the president is hoping to charge Canadians traveling to the U.S. by air and sea a small “visitor inspection fee.” Canadians traveling by private automobiles would not be charged. U.S. officials currently charge the fees to other travelers, and while Mexicans and Canadians have long been exempt security procedures have grown more intense, and more expensive for the U.S. government, since the 9-11 attacks. Applying the fees to the millions of Canadians that fly south of the border every year would help offset those cost.
