Massive demonstrations throughout the country are keeping up pressure on the new military government to implement democracy.
Tens of thousands of Egyptians returned to Cairo’s Tahrir Square Friday to celebrate the one-week anniversary of the resignation of Hosni Mubarak and remind the country’s new military rulers that they will accept nothing less than a civilian government. The mood in the square was celebratory, but Egyptians and their supporters around the world remain concerned that the military may not institute the democratic reforms they have promised. Many of the new rulers had close ties to Mubarak and some experts speculate the populist uprising simply paved the way for a soft military coup. Leading prayers in the square, cleric Sheik Youssef el-Qaradawi said, “The revolution is not over, until we have a new Egypt.”
