Aftershocks continue to be felt from a 6.3 magnitude quake that hit the southern city of Christchurch Tuesday.
A state of emergency has been declared in Christchurch as rescue workers continue to look for people trapped under buildings by a quake that hit around lunchtime Tuesday. New Zealand experiences roughly 14,000 earthquakes a year but the timing of this tremor, when many people were outside downtown, as well as its size, have contributed to its devastating effect. Eighty per cent of the city is without power, the city’s central cathedral has collapsed, and its airport flight tower toppled over. At least 150 to 200 people are believed to still be trapped under the rubble. Local news agencies are reporting that screams can be heard coming from at least one collapsed office building.
