The hugely unpopular Quebec premier is hoping to get his leadership back on track after a raft of corruption allegations.
Jean Charest is known as one of Canada’s most durable politicians, but even he might not be able to overcome his dismal disapproval rating, which according to recent polls is at a whopping 77 per cent. In an assertive inaugural address to the National Assembly Wednesday he outlined what he hopes will be perceived as forward-thinking plans for the province’s future, pledging billions of dollars to electrify public transit, encourage the purchase of electric cars, cut greenhouse gas emissions, and develop natural resources in northern Quebec. Charest’s popularity has plummeted on the perception that he is soft on corruption and he is facing an uphill battle to retain the Liberal leadership until elections two years from now.
