Loyalist fighters reportedly fire in the air to disperse anti-Gadhafi protesters.
With his government hanging by a thread, Moammar Gadhafi announced wage hikes and food subsidies Friday, but the measures are much too late to quell the uprising that has engulfed Libya. Gadhafi has lost control of most of the country outside of Tripoli, and the city was the site of renewed anti-government protests Friday. Thousands of people reportedly marched from a mosque in central Tripoli chanting anti-Gadhafi slogans but were partially dispersed by security forces firing into the air. No casualties were reported, but the death toll since protests began is believed to be well over 1,000. Amid reports of an intensifying government crackdown, Gadhafi’s son Seif al-Islam vowed his family will “live and die in Libya.”
