“There will be no immunity in Libya,” chief prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo said.
The International Criminal Court in the Hague opened an investigation into Libyan strongman Moammar Gadhafi Thursday, in a move that could bring the embattled leader in front of a tribunal if he is eventually deposed. The investigation also includes Gadhafi’s sons and members of his inner circle. Since Feb. 15 there have been widespread reports of government forces launching deadly attacks on civilians, with fighter planes bombing rebel-held cities and Gadhafi publically urging his supports to hunt down those who oppose him. The ICC’s investigation will be a key test for the international court, which many see as a key tool to deter and punish leaders who would commit war crimes.
