A tsunami warning has been issued for the B.C. coast after a magnitude 8.9 quake struck Japan’s eastern coast.
The earthquake, believed to be the biggest in Japanese history, originated 125 east of the country and triggered a tsunami that swept away buildings and boats and killed at least 32 people. News footage shows boats being carried inland on a tidal wave and slamming into overpasses, and hundreds of fires are burning out of control. Several nuclear power plants along the coast were shut down but there are no reports of radioactive leaks. The effects of the earthquake were felt 380 km away in Tokyo and damage is believed to be massive. Authorities in the Philippines said they were on alert for a one-meter high tusnami, while countries as far away as Chile and Canada were under tsunami alerts.
