The two movies picked up 15 awards between them at Canada’s annual film industry bash.
Want to make a great Canadian movie? Move to Montreal. Two films based in the Quebec city dominated the Genies Thursday night, with Middle Eastern drama Incendies taking eight honours including best picture and Barney’s Version snagging seven trophies. Incendies director Denis Villeneuve took home the best picture award, a prize he also won last year for his film based on the Montreal Massacre, Polytechnique. He filmed the two movies at the same time time. Barney’s Version won a trio of acting awards for Paul Giamatti, Dustin Hoffman, and Minnie Driver, none of whom were present to accept them. The two films’ domination was hardly a surprise; both were critically acclaimed and nominated for Academy Awards.
