The city of Brega has fallen to government troops as the military continues to beat back rebel forces.
With the West divided over whether to implement a no-fly zone over Libya, and international attention distracted by the disaster in Japan, Moammar Gadhafi is making key gains in his effort to suppress the rebellion that has torn his country in two. Government forces captured the port city of Brega Sunday, three days after violently taking back Ras Lanuf, another oil port 123 km to the West. The army is reportedly pushing eastward towards Benghazi, the capital of the anti-Gadhafi rebels. Saturday the Arab League endorsed the idea of implementing a no-fly zone to give rebels a fighting chance against the military, but NATO has yet to reach a consensus on the plan. France is leading the charge for intervention.
