“Survivor” Winner Jailed for Nine Months

Richard Hatch is on his way back to prison for failing to pay taxes on the $1 million he won on the first season of the popular show.

Hatch's Survivor opponents described him as arrogant and unrepentant, and it seems Judge William E. Smith agreed, as he sentenced Hatch to a nine-month jail term Monday. The sentence was three months more than prosecutors were asking for, and Smith justified it by saying Hatch had done nothing to rectify his tax situation, despite having been already jailed twice for the same offence. He was sentenced to 51 months in 2006 and, upon his release, was given three years to pay the IRS the money he owed from the $1-million prize he won on the first season of Survivor in 2000. He was jailed again in 2009 for violating terms of his release. More recently, Hatch has appeared on the current season of Celebrity Apprentice.
