The Liberal MP slammed the government’s use of the word 'barbaric' in the updated edition of Canada’s citizenship guide.
This was probably not the best battle for Justin Trudeau to pick. The Liberals’ immigration critic took issue with the government’s description of honour killings, forced marriages, and genital mutilation as “barbaric” in the latest edition of the official guide given to new immigrants, telling a radio station earlier this week that he was “uncomfortable” with the use of the word. He issued several messages on his Twitter feed attempting to explain his position, but eventually apologized for his initial remarks and said he had become “tangled in semantic weeds” over the issue. Immigration Minister Jason Kenney rejected his apology Tuesday, and said it was important to take a strong stance against cultural practices that are not welcome in Canada.
