Sex Sites to Get .xxx Domain Name

The Internet Corporation of Assigned Names and Numbers made the controversial decision to create the domain name last week.

The internet just got its own red-light district. The new .xxx domain name will differentiate between pornographic content and the rest of the internet, and was strongly resisted by some in the adult industry who claimed that it would ghettoize their content. Anti-pornography groups also opposed it, saying it would make filth on the internet more visible (as if that were possible). ICANN, the U.S. government-appointed body tasked with managing domain names, had been considering the move for years but gave final approval to the .xxx suffix last week in San Francisco.
