Stephen Harper visited the Governor General Saturday morning and asked him to dissolve Parliament.

The writ for Canada’s 41st federal election was dropped this morning, a day after opposition parties passed a motion in the House of Commons declaring they had lost confidence in the Conservative government. Stephen Harper emerged from his meeting with Governor General David Johnston at Rideau Hall and said that on May 2, Canadians will make a choice between a stable Conservative government and a “reckless coalition” made up of the Liberals, NDP, and Bloc Québécois. Even before the prime minister made his appearance, Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff attempted to throw cold water on swirling coalition speculation, releasing a statement saying he would not seek an alliance with any other party, but that coalition governments are a “legitimate constitutional option.”
